I believe that everyone likes to watch movie, however, most people don’t know how to analyze scene in the film. There are some definitions which I analyze scene from the movie named “Rule of Engagement” and I divide three main points are mise- scece, formal elements of film, and conventions of film. Those are three easy ways to understand and evaluate what is the movie making from and how the three main points work in the movie.
First of all, the mise- scene refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement – sets, props, actors, costumes, and lighting. When the movie started to play, it showed the jungle warfare and U.S marine were sneaky waliking through to the Vietnamese’s torritory. The costumes would be U.S and Vietnam military uniform. The arrangment for the each scene from the beginning are pointed on fighting war. When main actor named Colonel Terry Childers went to the Yemen, it showed many civilians carried guns and shot at U.S embassy. Also, the U.S ambassador’s office was in second floor, so the carmer should set between the ambassador’s office and civilians. Those civilians were Yemeni and they wore long sleeves and women were cover their faces. Most of important scene were Yemeni civilians attack U.S embassy such as burning the car, threwing thes stone, protesting against U.S marine and shooting at U.S embassy.
Second, the Formal elements of film content shot, angle, sound and lighting. This movie was using subjective (POV) shot and tracking shot. When the U.S marine attack back to the Yemeni civilians, that scenes were using high angle camera. Most scenes didn’t content any kinds of music and the sounds were people talking, crying, arguing, gun shooting and military training. The lighting was medium dark from indoor shooting and brighter shooting form outdoor.
The last one is convention of film. This movie described the Colonel Terry Childers, a 30-year Marine veteran and he was decorated office with combat experience in Vietnam war, Beirut and Desert storm. He saved many American and his men’s lives. He saved a country. He was patriot and hero. However, his mission on saving the American Ambassador in Yemen brought him downhill. He was facing a court marshall and charged for killing 83 innocent civilians. During the rescue mission there were snipers from across the buildings and “armed civilians” shooting at the rescue team. The Secretary of State felt it would create a political chaos to Americans since the relationship between US and Yemen were not good. He would prefer for someone to take the blame and punishment. That person was Colonel Terry Childers, so Terry asked his best friend, Hays Hodges, a vietnam veteran to be his defense lawyer. Hays Hodges testified that Terry killed shot his radioman because he refused to pull out his troops the first time. The defense made him testtify that Terry was a man of his word and he did release him after he called to pull out his troops in order to save american troops. Finally, the judges did not prosecute Terry due to inconclusive evidence and the Secretary of State was remived from his office to due violation of destroying evidence. The ambassador was removed from his office as well. Terry was honorbly discharged from the marine.
In conclustion, there are some definitions which I analyze scene from the movie named “Rule of Engagement” and I divide three main points are mise- scece, formal elements of film, and conventions of film. Those are interest knowledge to understand what is the film making from and how it works.
